Nancy Hightshoe was one of the first women in the nation assigned to beat patrol functions in a one-officer cruiser on rotating shifts in a high crime area.

As a police officer and later as a detective, she had the opportunity to observe life at a very intense, very REAL, very intimate level. Nancy shares stories of humor, courage and creative answers in dangerous, sometimes life-threatening, situations.

Nancy's clearance rate on rape cases was 85% while the national rate was 49%. (A case is cleared when an arrest is made or the case is unfounded because the incident did not occur.) Her successful record for sending criminals to prison demonstrates the value to both the individual and to the community of allowing each person the opportunity to grow and challenge untried horizons.

During her nine years on the force, she designed the St. Louis County Police Rape Squad. As a detective with that unit, Nancy investigated more than 150 felony sex crimes against men, women and children. She learned that people, who have lived through a traumatic event of this magnitude, do not hide behind the polite barriers so many of us have erected around ourselves.
